The freshman course content highlights Greek mythology, comparative mythology, the epic, and Shakespeare, along with poetry and the novel. An emphasis is placed on the basics of grammar, spelling and vocabulary as they relate to reading, speaking, writing, and the study of foreign languages. The development of writing skills is stressed through practical exercises in sentence formation, paragraphing and organization. A variety of literature based compositions, following the writing process, are incorporated into the curriculum. The students complete several research projects, culminating in the biographical research project.
